The Lesotho chapter of the of the African Peer Review
Mechanism (APRM), through its National Governing Council
(NGC) jointly with the NUL-ISAS/LIPAM Research Institutes,
presented a progress report to the APRM Ministerial
Sub-Committee today April 24, 2008.
Speaking at the occasion, the Chairperson of the Ministerial
Sub-Committee, The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs
and International Relations, Mr. Mohlabi Tsekoa challenged
the consortium to continue delivering despite the limited
time and financial constraints. According to the Chairperson
of the NGC, Mrs. Mamosebi Pholo, the research has already
started and it covers all the ten districts of Lesotho. The
final report is expected to be ready by the end of July
2008.
The APRM seeks to fast track economic development through
strengthening the pillars of democracy under four thematic
areas:
- Democracy
and Good Political Governance;
- Economic
Governance and Management;
- Corporate
Governance; and
-
Socio-economic Development.
Following
Lesotho’s accession to the APRM July 2004, a National
Consultative Workshop was held in October 2005, the
objectives of which were, among others, sensitization to
enable the Basotho to appreciate the APRM, as well as to
create ownership of the process through participation by all
stakeholders. Further consultations brought into being the
National Governing Council in August 2006.
The National Governing Council works together with a
Secretariat comprising PS Foreign Affairs Mr T. Metsing
(Chair) and a Focal Point from the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs, Ambassador M. Leteka. The NUL-ISAS/LIPAM team is
headed by Mrs M. Mapetla and Dr J Dzimba.
The Ministerial Sub-Committee is made up of six Cabinet
Ministers, namely Hon. M. Tsekoa - Foreign Affairs (Chair),
Hon. Dr T. Thahane - Finance and Economic Planning, Hon. Dr
P. Sekatle – Local Government, Hon. M. Mahase – Justice and
Law, Hon. P. Lebesa – Trade and Industry, and Hon. Dr M.
Ramatlapeng – Health and Social Welfare. |
