The Government of Lesotho wishes to inform the general Public about the acts of insurgency which occurred this morning at the State House where unknown gun men disguising in the Lesotho military uniform and their vehicles, were repulsed by security forces.

The Lesotho police have commenced serious investigations concerning these incidents and one of the culprits is already under police custody.

The insurgency was carried out using two Lesotho military Vehicles and insurgents were speaking in foreign languages of neighbouring countries.

The attacks were carried out first at Makoanyane Military Barracks where very few soldiers were around. At Makoanyane Barracks police further discovered the following:
  1. One military personnel was forced to drive one of the vehicles;

  2. Five soldiers were hijacked by the insurgents who

    -2-

    forced them to drive to the State House where they were repulsed by the security forces at the State House.

  3. The insurgents further hijacked a privately owned passenger transport vehicle (Taxi) along the Main North One, but were captured by the security forces. One of the insurgents was arrested.

The Government further wishes to inform the Basotho Nation that three of the gun men died during the shoot-out involving the police and other security agencies next to the national abattoir along the Main North One, in the outskirts of Maseru. There were no casualities on the side of the security services and the public.

The Nation is advised to stay calm while the police and other security agencies are doing everything in their power to return the security situation to normalcy and they will be kept abreast on further developments as the situation unfolds.

The nation is further requested to report to the security services any suspicious movements.
